Instructions for gathering signatures
(items in bold are mandatory, the rest is our best information at this time)

Only registered voters in Vancouver can sign the petition, so you will receive a list of registered voters in an area that you select (unless someone else has it). The list will contain about 1000-2000 names. You can request a different list at any time. (Our goal is to get signatures, so helping you makes sense.)

The list is organized by street and address, so you can walk down one side of a street and knock on the door of every house containing a registered voter. If there is more than one registered voter in a house, you will see that on the list and can ask about the other voters in the house. When you reach the end of a street, you go to the other side and work back towards your starting point. When one street is completed choose another nearby street and repeat. The lists are whole precincts and contain low density areas as well as high density - you will probably want to avoid low density areas. You should also obey any notices that imply that you cannot gather signatures.
(Note that the sorting of numbered streets is unusual in that 10 and 100 come before 20, so scan down the list for any numbered streets if it appears to be missing.)

When someone answers the door, you can ask if one of the names on the list would be interested in signing a petition to stop the city from spending money on light rail and to stop them from bringing light rail to Vancouver. If more than one name is at that address, you can then ask for the other people by name.

TIPS:
Ÿ
Be polite.
Ÿ
Mention that this will Stop the city spending money on light rail.
Ÿ
As a result, this should stop light rail AND stop bridge tolls which are really to pay for light rail.
Ÿ
Be aware of the time you are spending talking - get on to the next signature quickly.
Ÿ
Debates and long conversations can reduces you income!
Ÿ
Thank them, even they decline to sign.

If someone makes a mistake on their signature (wrong date, etc.), just have them cross it out and start over on the next line.

Since we are just starting the door to door phase of our campaign, there may be better ways to get the most signatures per hour. Feel free to experiment. But all people MUST sign their own name, people can sign only once and must be a registered voter ON THE LIST. Only the signer can fill in their address, city, zip and date.

You must sign and date the signature sheet AFTER you are done with that sheet. In item 3, write the number of signatures on the page - do not count any that are crossed out or skipped lines.  Please pay attention to items 1-6 which you affirming by your signature.

We do REQUIRE that you keep us posted on your activities. Call us at least every third day, or we may assume that you have quit working and assign your territory to others. You can leave a message at 360-313-6808. We do want you to turn in your signatures if you get over 100 so that we can properly manage our money and we reserve the right to NOT buy more than 100 signatures if we have not heard from you (in other words - keep in touch!).
